Hi,

I was looking for a big board for light winds. I weigh 130 lbs and generally sail in rolling swell on the great lakes. We have some nice swells in winds of 13 - 15 mph. Do you believe that the Cross 117 would plane up and work well in these conditions for someone my size on a 7.2? I'm currently using a Fanatic Cross 109, which is only 62 cm wide in the middle and 39cm wide in the tail. The cross is plenty nice and maneuverable but falls off in the holes and requires some pumping to get onto a plane.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,

The Cross 117 will carry perfectly a 7.2 sail , and will give you a much better planing ability than your current Fanatic , due to the extra width and shape design. You can also expect a lot of comfort thanks to the DDSA shock absorbers.

Cheers
Armand

Some pics of my Cross 117 in light wind/flatwater conditions (sail: 7.2 Saber wind 12/13 knots, I weight 79kg)...
It works! And as Armand said, the board is very comfortable!

I had an incredible session on the Cross 117 today. I sail in Long Island, New York. We've had a warm winter and have been able to sail non-stop this year. When I got to the beach, the wind had backed off and was 12-16 mph. The occasional wave was head high. Most of the other windsurfers had called it a day. A few kiters were out along with a bunch of surfers. I jumped on the Cross (we call it the Hippo around here) and just powered right out through the shore break without a problem. Got a few fun jumps. I had the Wardog wave fin in it and scored a couple of nice down the line runs. This is just a super fun board! It is the most versatile "big" board I've ever had. For what it's worth I weigh 165 lbs. Thank you Exocet!

BZH,

Thanks for the pictures. I probably wouldn't have believed the planing ability of that board otherwise. It's amazing that such a small board is planing without any white caps on the water. Normally, I wouldn't even measure the wind, let alone think of sailing unless the water was covered with white caps.

Was at a demo last year and this 80# kid walks up to me and says, "That Cross is the best board I've ever been on." I looked over expecting to see him pointing to the 90 or 105. Nope, the 117.

They are versatile, for lots of people for their own reasons.

Jon, I'm sure the board can plane even a little bir earlier with a 7.5 sail with 2 cambers (like the NP V6) and also a more powerfull fin... but I would'nt put something bigger than 7.5/7.6 or so if you're a medium/heavyweight rider (sorry but I've no idea of what is 130lbs in kilograms!)

Hi Jon,
Just left you a voicemail...give a ring back if you want to cut to the quick on board comparisons...

Here are a couple of more examples to what John I was alluding to when he said...

"They are versatile, for lots of people for their own reasons."

I have two clients at the opposite end of the spectrum from you and the 80# kid that John I was referencing...these guys are 6'+ and well over 200#...#225 and 250#...thereabouts...

They both gave up volume on their previous boards that the Cross 117 replaced...but, didn't lose anything...matter of fact...Will came down from 131 liters...the smaller Cross planes earlier and has a better range...is far more comfy in choppy water...not to mention it's waveriding ability...and the fact that you won't embarass yourself going up against a racerhead in flat water, if you move the straps outboard and use the OEM fin or aftermarket upgrade...

The Cross 117 comes with the 36cm Select SuperCross fin (far right):

Jon...at 130 lbs (59kgs) you are going to just kill it with your 7.2m2...holy shmoly!!!

psssssssssstt...here is the key to using this board in waves and swell...

You may find, that with the increased planability and looseness of the Cross 117, you could give up some sail size for increased comfort amd maneuverability...I did...
I find that the Aerotech Phantom 6.8m2 is the biggest sail I need...at 200 lbs (91kgs) and oftentimes, I'll just use my 6.3m2 that rigs on a 430 RDM...

I haven't heard or read a single negative comment on the Exocet Cross...online or otherwise...that's an anomaly these days...

There are quite a few Exocet customer testimonials on my site:

That only represents a fraction of the satisfied clients that bothered to write a note...
