I really like UW boards on the face of the wave. It’s amazing. It’s so loose!

However, I felt UW 78 is little small for me and UW 88 is a little big for me. If there was an UW 82, that would be perfect for me. I’m a big guy at 208 lbs. UW 78 is a little too much work for me in light wind on the inside. UW 88 is a little too big in jumping and whenever I’m on a really big wave.

I know the shapes have changed for 2005 model. I read that it feels smaller when jumping. How 2005 UW 78 and 88 are differs than 2004’s? I’m hoping either UW 88 rides smaller or UW 78 rides bigger than 2004’s.

Any suggestion for my next board? I don’t want to get both, just one. I already have OW 105 board. 105 is my main light wind wave and onshore wave board. I also have 2003 UW 88 I’m considering keeping if there’s no reason to upgrade to 2005.

One other question... is 2005 UW stronger and more durable than 2003/2004? I noticed the weight has increased.

Hi John,

Being much smaller than you at 75 kg, I use the 2005 UW? 88 as my lightwind wave board (with 5,7 m? sail). The 2005 UW?88 feels smaller and much more lively in the surf than the 2004 UW88, it should compliment quite well your OW?105.

Thanks for your repsonse. That's really good to hear. 2005 UW?88 looks really promising!

Patrice, what do you think?

Sorry Armand, I've got to inject a 92 kg perspective. The float of the old UW's were off. The new ones are right on. The new UW 88 will indeed be too close in performance to the OW 105. The new UW 78 is indeed 78 liters. Therefore, it will behave like a wide 80ish liter board whereas the 03-04 UW 78 was more like a 73 liter one.

Or, there is the overlap of the OW 85 which is slightly floatier, but a little narrower and longer... Great amount of good overlap in perfromance this year can only leave us all with lots of win-win choices. Cheers.

I thought someone told me this for 03/04 boards:
UW 88 is really a 90 liter board
UW 78 is really an 80 liter board

So basically you're saying that the new UW 78 is approximately at least 7 liter bigger than the older model? That's a big difference. If that's the case, then the newer UW 78 would work much better for me.

Yeah, I had OW 85 and loved it. But I wanted a more turning board on the wave. Volume wise, it was good for me.

John

P.S. Thanks John I and Armand for replies.

UW 03/04 have less volumes than what it is anounce
UW 04/05 are correct to the liter, it is also true that the new UW do feel as big as last year one although they have more volumes.
Main reason is due the length of the boards and the increase of volume on the rail in front of the mast foot. What I like with those new boards is that you can actually use more volume in stronger wind. This extra volume is always nice to have when the wind drops
I would then go for the 88 in complement to the OW 105
Also I would not say that both line are over lapping, they offer a very diferent ride

I've been riding the 2005 UW? 78 & 88 for several months now...
Awesome boards...really quick to plane...quite a bit different than the old school UW's...not comparable apples to apples, really...
The 2005 UW? boards are driven off of the front foot...way more surfy style...rode the 2005 UW? 88 in over mast high, down the line waves...
felt like a skateboard as I motored everywhere on the wave face I wanted to go...

That said, we just got back from a gear testing trip where we discovered that the 2005 UW? 88 is an awesome B&J board...not just a pure waveboard like some others in this genre...

Here's a shot comparing UW? 88 to OW? 105 and Cross 117...

Thanks Wardog! Good to hear, in addition to wave sailing, that it's a good B&J board.
